What happened
Formlabs released the large-format selective laser sintering system Fuse X1 on June 9, 2026, for engineering development and production applications. The announcement gives a molding space of 330 × 330 × 565 mm, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The parameters and delivery arrangements here are from the manufacturer's announcement and do not mean that the co-creator has configured the device.
Co-creator’s observation: Calculate the entire batch first, then choose the technology
R&D prototypes, small batch trial sales and stable mass production solve three different problems. For projects that are small in number and are still undergoing structural changes, additive manufacturing can be listed as a candidate solution; however, the price of one sample cannot be used to directly calculate the cost of the entire batch of delivery. Powder cleaning, surface treatment, dimensional inspection and reworking of defective products should all be included in the comparison.
When communicating with customers, we recommend listing the quantity, size, usage, surface requirements and delivery time at the same time, and then comparing printing, CNC, replica molding and injection molding. High complexity does not mean that it is suitable for printing, and small quantity does not mean that other processes have no advantages.
From prototype to delivery, what verifications need to be completed?
In the first round of prototypes, assembly and function are verified first; after entering small batches, the size and appearance of different batches are also checked to see if they are stable. The buckles, thin walls, load-bearing points and mating surfaces need to be recorded separately, and it cannot be judged qualified by just taking an overall photo.
When customers prepare their requirements, they can provide a drawing showing key dimensions and estimated first batch quantities. Let’s discuss the process route around these conditions. Device releases are industry information and adoption is still determined by specific parts and verification results.
