As automobile manufacturing grows, component development pays more attention to verification

Reverse engineering and modification of automobile parts cannot stop at similar appearance; assembly relationships, materials, and dimensional basis are also critical.

What happened

The 2025 Statistical Bulletin of the National Bureau of Statistics shows that among industries above designated size, the added value of the automobile manufacturing industry will increase by 11.5% in 2025 compared with the previous year. This statistic covers the entire industry and does not directly indicate the market demand for a certain type of parts, a certain company or a certain modification project.

Co-creator’s observation: Reverse data must serve engineering purposes

After getting the physical object, the first thing is not to model it immediately, but to clarify its purpose: is it to fill in missing drawings, check existing parts, or change the installation relationship? For different purposes, the details that need to be retained in the model, the tolerance expression, and the verification methods are also different.

Samples that appear to be complete may have wear, deformation or later repairs. Scans reflect the current surface and cannot automatically restore original design intent. Therefore, it is necessary to determine which data can be used directly based on the assembly object, key benchmarks and physical status.

Sample confirmation and usage boundaries

We recommend checking the shape, mounting points, mating surfaces and avoidance spaces separately. First use the sample to verify that it can be installed and positioned correctly, and then discuss materials and processes based on the intended use. If load bearing, safety, regulatory or vehicle requirements are involved, special verification should be completed by a responsible party with corresponding capabilities.

When providing information to the R&D team, try to bring matching parts, original drawings and usage environment instructions, not just an isolated part. Reverse modeling is the starting point of development, but it does not mean that all performance verification has been completed, and unverified samples cannot be directly regarded as qualified mass production parts.
